Sweet Auburn Works Shut Down After Years of Lies
ATLANTA, GEORGIA – Sweet Auburn Works promised transformation but delivered disappointment.
Non-profit watchdog, SAFE investigated Sweet Auburn Works for misuse of funds and failed projects that ultimately betrayed the community trust. SAFE confirmed the following multiple projects have been funded with no completion.
- $1.4 million dollars for the Hero Walk.
- $1.2 million for the Spark Lab.
- $800,000 for Reconnecting Auburn.
- $100,000 + for Beautification Fund.
No deliverables.
- Restore community spaces.
- Secure parks and walkways.
- Improve storefronts and facade.
Instead of clean streets and gorgeous walk ways, public and donor funds disappeared along with proposed projects that where never even started. When a Open Records Request was made, all key records were missing and those entrusted to lead Sweet Auburn Works such as Lejuano Varnell, benefited while the community suffered.
SAFE, a community accountability organization, responded with months of research, interviews, document collection, and collaboration with IRS investigators led to this decisive outcome:
The IRS has revoked Sweet Auburn Works’ nonprofit status.
Be SAFE.
